What is Freedom?
Here in America we celebrate our freedom on July 4th, our Independence Day. Yet, I saw bickering on social media about the US Women’s soccer team…apparently exercising their freedom to some peoples disliking. Freedom appears to have different meanings to different people. Some think of it as a ticket to do what you want, when you want. When I think about freedom, I think of what were the colonists fighting for in the American Revolution? Or, what about the Civil War?
What does freedom look like in my own life? How am I free?
Romans 6:7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.
Romans 6:9 We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him.
Romans 6:11 So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.
Romans 6:22 But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.
What word do you see in each of these verses? Power.
Where is the power and who has the power or authority? What does it mean to be a slave? Whoever or whatever has power over you can put you in a position where you feel like you have no control. You don’t have a choice.
I remember my old life. I remember reading –
Romans 7:18-24 ‘And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong, it is sin living in me that does it. I have discovered this principle of life- that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?’
and thinking, ‘this is exactly how I feel!’ I couldn’t help but make mistakes and choose what I knew to be wrong or unhealthy. I was trapped in this vicious cycle.
How could I ever be free?
I have come to the conclusion that freedom is a personal choice. It is not physical in the sense that my circumstances and situation might not change, but in my heart and mind, I can be free.
Romans 8: 1-2 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
It might seem like an oxymoron, but when I chose to surrender to Christ…when I chose to make God the Lord and Savior of my life, I found freedom. Alone, I was a slave to my own thoughts. With the power of the Holy Spirit, with growth in my spiritual journey, I have tools that help me to not be a slave to my thoughts. I choose freedom.
What kind of freedom are you searching for? Is it physical? How so?
Do you feel like someone or something has control or power over you?
Are you trapped in your own mind? Can you choose a path of personal freedom?
You have a choice. You a Power that you can tap into. That Power has overcome the world.
Romans 8:6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
